About the Honoree
It was a fateful weekend at Hospice of Marion County that marked a turning point in Dr. Pares' career. He was confronted with a woman battling cancer, her condition dire and in need of immediate attention. In a moment of crisis, Dr. Pares and her son went into the kitchen to MacGyver ways to provide her comfort for some time. The son asked about his black medical bag, which Dr. Pares said only contained his lunch and snacks.
This experience marked the beginning of a profound realization: the underutilization of such compassionate care within the medical system.
Dr. Pares' vision for transforming palliative care resonated with Bonnie, Kelly and Lynn. Together, they founded the Center for Comprehensive Palliative Care (CCPC) in 2006. The program's success was undeniable, with patients and physicians alike lauding its impact. Within a short span of four years, the CCPC was honored with three state awards, followed by national recognition in 2009.
Over the years, Dr. Pares and his team at the CCPC witnessed exponential growth in consultations, public engagements and physician education. From a modest start, they expanded their reach to touch the lives of thousands, guided by a small but spirited staff.
